Olfactive Profile
- Note classification: Middle to base note
- Scent family: Spicy / Warm / Sweet / Phenolic
Clove Bud Essential Oil has a powerful warm-spicy profile with sweet, woody, slightly medicinal, and phenolic undertones. It feels deeper and more rounded than clove leaf, warmer and more aromatic than cinnamon, and more intense than many soft spice oils. Its character is rich, comforting, and instantly recognisable, making it especially useful in festive, oriental, gourmand, amber, incense, and warm aromatic compositions.
The opening is strong, spicy, and sweetly aromatic, while the drydown becomes warmer, darker, and more woody-phenolic. Compared to softer spices, clove bud brings more impact and depth, making it useful when a formula needs warmth, intensity, and a clear spicy signature.

Formulation & Creative Uses
Clove Bud Essential Oil works as a strong warm-spicy modifier. It adds heat, depth, sweetness, and aromatic intensity to a formula, helping soft, sweet, woody, resinous, citrus, and gourmand compositions feel richer and more dimensional. It is especially useful when a blend needs a clear festive warmth, an oriental-spicy accent, or a darker aromatic backbone.
Common applications
- Diffusers: Useful in very low levels for warm, spicy, festive, amber, incense, and winter-inspired blends, always within IFRA limits.
- Candles & wax melts: Adds strong spicy warmth and excellent seasonal character, especially in Christmas, bakery, orange-spice, chai, amber, and cozy home fragrance compositions.
- Soaps: Can bring a powerful spicy accent, but must be used carefully within IFRA limits and tested for process stability.
- Bath & body products: Suitable only at carefully controlled levels and within IFRA limits due to its high impact and sensitising potential.
- Perfumery: Useful in oriental accords, spicy ambers, gourmand spices, incense blends, leather accents, tobacco accords, festive perfumes, and dark woody structures.
Creative directions
Use Clove Bud Essential Oil when a formula needs warmth, spice, depth, and a strong festive or oriental character. It works especially well in blends that feel too flat, cold, sweet, fruity, or simple, helping the composition gain richness, intensity, and a more memorable aromatic signature.
For festive and winter blends, combine clove bud with orange, cinnamon, vanilla, benzoin, nutmeg, ginger, or tonka-style materials to create a warm holiday effect. For darker oriental directions, use it with patchouli, cedarwood, frankincense, labdanum-style accords, amber materials, resins, and balsams. For gourmand or bakery-style compositions, it can support apple, pumpkin, caramel, chai, biscuit, cocoa, and spiced vanilla themes.
Clove bud is also useful in incense, tobacco, leather, spicy amber, and rich woody compositions. Because it is extremely powerful and eugenol-rich, it can dominate a formula quickly and may become harsh, medicinal, or irritating if overdosed. It performs best as a controlled accent, balanced with citrus, sweet balsams, woods, vanilla, resins, or softer spices that round out its intense warm-spicy character.
Storage & Natural Variations
Clove Bud Essential Oil is classified as harmful if swallowed or in contact with skin, irritating to the skin, irritating to the eyes, sensitising, and hazardous if swallowed and enters the airways. Always follow the IFRA guidance and SDS for the intended product category. The final safety assessment, dilution level, labeling, and regulatory compliance remain the responsibility of the manufacturer.
Essential oils are natural aromatic materials, and slight variations in scent, colour, density, and appearance may occur from batch to batch. These differences are normal and can be influenced by harvest conditions, climate, origin, plant material, and natural compositional variation.
Scent perception may also vary depending on individual sensitivity, dilution level, formulation base, and application method. Essential oils may not smell exactly the same in the bottle as they do in a finished product. We strongly recommend testing a 10g bottle before committing to larger quantities, especially for commercial production.
To preserve quality, store tightly sealed in the original container, away from heat, light, air, and moisture. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, keep away from ignition sources, and avoid release into drains, surface water, or the environment.
