Please note

This is a pure, undiluted essential oil designed for crafting end products such as candles, diffusers, soaps, bath products, and other personal care items. Essential oils are highly concentrated and should not be applied directly to the skin without proper dilution in a carrier oil. All our essential oils are measured in grams, not milliliters. Bottle fill levels may vary due to differences in oil density, which affects volume.

For specific usage limits, please refer to the Frankincense Essential Oil IFRA guidelines or consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) included in the “Related Documents” tab. Compliance of the final product remains the responsibility of the manufacturer.

Olfactive Profile

  • Note classification: Middle to base note
  • Scent family: Resinous / Woody / Amber

Frankincense Essential Oil has a resinous, sweet, and incense-like profile with fresh terpenic, woody, lightly citrusy, balsamic, and slightly spicy nuances. It feels brighter and more transparent than myrrh, less earthy than patchouli, and more resinous than cedarwood. Its character is elegant, spiritual, and naturally atmospheric, making it especially useful in incense, amber, spa, woody, citrus, aromatic, and meditative compositions.

The opening is fresh, resinous, and slightly citrusy, while the drydown becomes warmer, softer, woodier, and more balsamic. Compared to heavier resinous materials, frankincense brings lift as well as depth, making it valuable when a formula needs a refined incense character without becoming too dark, smoky, or heavy.

Formulation & Creative Uses

Frankincense Essential Oil works as a resinous aromatic middle/base note with a soft woody-balsamic drydown. It adds clarity, lift, incense warmth, and natural resinous elegance to a formula, helping citrus, floral, woody, amber, herbal, spicy, or musky compositions feel more composed and atmospheric. It is especially useful when a blend needs a spiritual incense effect without the dense sweetness of heavy resins.

Common applications

  • Diffusers: Excellent for meditative, grounding, incense, spa-like, resinous, woody, clean aromatic, and calm atmospheric blends.
  • Candles & wax melts: Adds soft incense warmth and resinous depth, especially in amber woods, church incense, spa, winter, meditation, sacred woods, and warm atmospheric home fragrance compositions.
  • Soaps: Brings a resinous woody character, with testing required for scent retention and process stability.
  • Bath & body products: Suitable when used within IFRA limits and proper dilution guidelines.
  • Perfumery: Useful in incense accords, amber structures, citrus-resin blends, woody bases, aromatic colognes, chypre-style compositions, natural perfumery, and meditative fragrance profiles.

Creative directions

Use Frankincense Essential Oil when a formula needs resinous clarity, soft incense warmth, and elegant woody depth. It works especially well in blends that feel too flat, sharp, simple, citrusy, herbal, or emotionally cold, helping the composition become warmer, smoother, and more atmospheric.

For incense and meditative blends, combine frankincense with myrrh, patchouli, cedarwood, sandalwood, labdanum-style accords, benzoin, or amyris to create a deeper resinous structure. For citrus-resin directions, use it with bergamot, orange, mandarine, lemon, grapefruit, or petitgrain to build a bright and elegant aromatic opening. For floral and spa compositions, pair it with lavender, geranium, ylang ylang, rose, clary sage, or soft musks to add calm warmth and a more polished drydown.

Frankincense is also useful in amber blends, sacred wood profiles, winter home fragrance, aromatic wellness-style accords, masculine colognes, and natural perfume bases. Because it has a fresh terpenic opening as well as resinous warmth, it can feel sharp if unsupported or too incense-like if overdosed. It performs best when balanced with citrus oils, soft woods, florals, musks, or balsamic materials that round out its resinous character.

Storage & Natural Variations

Frankincense Essential Oil is classified as flammable, harmful if swallowed, irritating to the skin, sensitising, irritating to the eyes, hazardous if swallowed and enters the airways, and very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects. Always follow the IFRA guidance and SDS for the intended product category. The final safety assessment, dilution level, labeling, and regulatory compliance remain the responsibility of the manufacturer.

Essential oils are natural aromatic materials, and slight variations in scent, colour, density, viscosity, and appearance may occur from batch to batch. These differences are normal and can be influenced by harvest conditions, origin, plant material, resin quality, distillation conditions, aging, and natural compositional variation.

Scent perception may also vary depending on individual sensitivity, dilution level, formulation base, and application method. Essential oils may not smell exactly the same in the bottle as they do in a finished product. We strongly recommend testing a 10g bottle before committing to larger quantities, especially for commercial production.

To preserve quality, store tightly sealed in the original container, away from heat, light, air, and moisture. Frankincense Essential Oil contains terpenic materials and should be protected from oxidation to preserve its fresh resinous character. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, keep away from ignition sources, and avoid release into drains, surface water, or the environment.
