Elemi Essential Oil

Elemi Essential Oil has a bright, resinous, and balsamic aroma with fresh citrus-like lift, soft spice, and a smooth incense-like warmth. Known for its sparkling resin character, it’s ideal for candles, diffusers, soaps, bath products, perfumes, and personal care formulations where a fresh yet resinous note is desired. This oil brings brightness, warmth, and aromatic complexity to blends, especially when paired with frankincense, citrus oils, lavender, cedarwood, patchouli, myrrh, petitgrain, or amber materials.

Elemi Essential Oil is best used as a high-impact accent material rather than a broad-use base note, as its IFRA limits are more restricted than softer resinous oils such as frankincense or vetiver. Its strength lies in the way it bridges citrus freshness with incense warmth, giving blends a bright, peppery-resinous sparkle without becoming too heavy. In small amounts, Elemi can lift woody, amber, herbal, citrus, and spa-style compositions while adding natural resin depth and a more refined aromatic finish.

Ambiance: Resinous / Fresh / Spicy / Bright

Please note

This is a pure, undiluted essential oil designed for crafting end products such as candles, diffusers, soaps, bath products, and other personal care items. Essential oils are highly concentrated and should not be applied directly to the skin without proper dilution in a carrier oil. All our essential oils are measured in grams, not milliliters. Bottle fill levels may vary due to differences in oil density, which affects volume.

For specific usage limits, please refer to the Elemi Essential Oil IFRA guidelines or consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) included in the “Related Documents” tab. Compliance of the final product remains the responsibility of the manufacturer.

Packaging note: 10g testers are supplied in PET bottles for affordable evaluation and are not intended for long-term archival storage. Production sizes from 50g upwards are supplied in premium aluminium bottles for improved long-term protection. Read more

Olfactive Profile

  • Note classification: Top to middle note
  • Scent family: Resinous / Fresh / Spicy / Balsamic

Elemi Essential Oil has a fresh, resinous, and balsamic profile with citrus-like, peppery, spicy, green, and softly incense-like nuances. It feels brighter and more sparkling than myrrh, lighter than patchouli, and more citrus-resinous than frankincense. Its character is fresh, aromatic, and naturally radiant, making it especially useful in incense, citrus-resin, spa, woody, amber, aromatic, and fresh oriental compositions.

The opening is bright, fresh, and terpenic, with a lemony-resinous lift. The drydown becomes warmer, softer, more balsamic, and gently spicy. Compared to heavier resinous materials, Elemi brings more lift and movement, making it valuable when a formula needs resin depth without losing freshness.

Formulation & Creative Uses

Elemi Essential Oil works as a fresh resinous top-to-middle note. It adds citrus-like lift, peppery brightness, balsamic warmth, and aromatic resin complexity to a formula, helping woody, amber, herbal, citrus, incense, musky, or floral compositions feel more polished and luminous. It is especially useful when a blend needs a resinous effect that feels fresh rather than dark, heavy, or smoky.

Common applications

  • Diffusers: Useful for fresh resinous, incense, spa-like, meditative, citrus-amber, aromatic, and clean woody blends, always within IFRA limits.
  • Candles & wax melts: Adds bright resinous warmth, especially in incense, amber woods, citrus resin, spa, sacred woods, winter, and atmospheric home fragrance compositions.
  • Soaps: Brings a fresh balsamic-spicy character, with testing required for scent retention and process stability.
  • Bath & body products: Suitable when used within IFRA limits and proper dilution guidelines.
  • Perfumery: Useful in incense accords, citrus-resin blends, amber structures, woody bases, aromatic colognes, spa perfumes, modern chypres, and fresh oriental compositions.

Creative directions

Use Elemi Essential Oil when a formula needs brightness, resinous lift, and a refined spicy-balsamic texture. It works especially well in blends that feel too flat, heavy, woody, resinous, sweet, or dark, helping the composition become fresher, more radiant, and more aromatic.

For incense and resinous blends, combine Elemi with frankincense, myrrh, patchouli, cedarwood, sandalwood, amyris, benzoin, or labdanum-style accords to create a bright resin structure with depth. For citrus-resin directions, use it with bergamot, lemon, grapefruit, orange, mandarine, petitgrain, or lime to enhance its natural sparkling freshness. For spa and aromatic compositions, pair it with lavender, rosemary, clary sage, eucalyptus, vetiver, soft musks, or clean woods to create a polished botanical effect.

Elemi is also useful in meditation blends, sacred wood profiles, fresh amber compositions, citrus incense accords, woody perfumes, and bright resinous home fragrance. Because it is limonene-rich, highly aromatic, and IFRA-restricted in several categories, it should be used carefully and tested at modest levels. It performs best when balanced with woods, resins, citrus oils, musks, or soft herbal materials that support its fresh balsamic character without letting it dominate.

Storage & Natural Variations

Elemi Essential Oil is classified as flammable, hazardous if swallowed and enters the airways, irritating to the skin, sensitising, and very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects. Always follow the IFRA guidance and SDS for the intended product category. The final safety assessment, dilution level, labeling, and regulatory compliance remain the responsibility of the manufacturer.

Essential oils are natural aromatic materials, and slight variations in scent, colour, density, viscosity, and appearance may occur from batch to batch. These differences are normal and can be influenced by resin quality, origin, harvest conditions, distillation conditions, aging, and natural compositional variation.

Scent perception may also vary depending on individual sensitivity, dilution level, formulation base, and application method. Essential oils may not smell exactly the same in the bottle as they do in a finished product. We strongly recommend testing a 10g bottle before committing to larger quantities, especially for commercial production.

To preserve quality, store tightly sealed in the original container, away from heat, light, air, and moisture. Elemi Essential Oil contains a high level of terpenic materials and should be protected from oxidation to preserve its fresh resinous character. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, keep away from ignition sources, and avoid release into drains, surface water, or the environment.
