Woody molecules are aroma chemicals used to create or strengthen wood effects within a fragrance. Depending on the material, they may smell cedar-like, sandalwood-like, dry, creamy, smoky, earthy, mineral or warm and ambery. Perfumers use woody molecules to build structure, add depth and support the dry-down of floral, spicy, citrus, amber and musky compositions. Some form the main character of a woody accord, while others add texture, diffusion or lasting power. Careful dosing is important, as powerful woody materials can become harsh, overly dry or dominant.
