Please note

This is a pure, undiluted essential oil designed for crafting end products such as candles, diffusers, soaps, bath products, and other personal care items. Essential oils are highly concentrated and should not be applied directly to the skin without proper dilution in a carrier oil. All our essential oils are measured in grams, not milliliters. Bottle fill levels may vary due to differences in oil density, which affects volume.

For specific usage limits, please refer to the Ylang Ylang Essential Oil IFRA guidelines or consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) included in the “Related Documents” tab. Compliance of the final product remains the responsibility of the manufacturer.

Olfactive Profile

  • Note classification: Middle note
  • Scent family: Floral / Exotic / Sweet / Balsamic

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil has a rich, sweet, and exotic floral profile with creamy, fruity, balsamic, slightly spicy, and gently narcotic nuances. It feels more tropical and sensual than lavender, sweeter and heavier than rosewood, and more floral than most citrus or herbal oils. Its character is opulent, rounded, and unmistakably floral, making it especially useful in romantic, sensual, tropical, floral, amber, spa, and soft oriental compositions.

The opening is sweet, floral, and slightly fruity, while the drydown becomes warmer, creamier, more balsamic, and softly powdery. Compared to lighter floral oils, ylang ylang brings more body, depth, and natural sensuality, making it valuable when a formula needs floral richness, sweetness, and a more luxurious emotional tone.

Formulation & Creative Uses

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil works as a rich floral heart note. It adds sweetness, volume, sensuality, and creamy exotic floral depth to a formula, helping citrus, woody, amber, vanilla, musk, floral, and resinous compositions feel more luxurious and emotionally rounded. It is especially useful when a blend needs floral richness without becoming purely rosy, powdery, or green.

Common applications

  • Diffusers: Useful for romantic, sensual, tropical, floral, spa-like, comforting, and luxurious blends, always within IFRA limits.
  • Candles & wax melts: Adds exotic floral warmth and creamy sweetness, especially in tropical florals, vanilla florals, amber florals, spa blends, and romantic home fragrance compositions.
  • Soaps: Brings a rich floral character, with testing required for scent retention and process stability.
  • Bath & body products: Suitable when used within IFRA limits and proper dilution guidelines.
  • Perfumery: Useful in exotic florals, tropical bouquets, sensual amber florals, vanilla-floral accords, musky florals, oriental blends, and soft romantic compositions.

Creative directions

Use Ylang Ylang Essential Oil when a formula needs richness, floral volume, sweetness, and a sensual tropical heart. It works especially well in blends that feel too thin, sharp, citrusy, herbal, dry, or emotionally cold, helping the composition become warmer, fuller, and more expressive.

For romantic floral blends, combine ylang ylang with rose, jasmine, neroli, geranium, lavender, or palmarosa to create a fuller and more sensual floral heart. For tropical and sunny directions, use it with coconut, orange, mandarine, bergamot, lime, vanilla-like materials, or soft musks to build a creamy exotic effect. For deeper amber or oriental compositions, pair it with sandalwood, benzoin, patchouli, amyris, cedarwood, frankincense, or tonka-style notes to give the blend warmth and lasting depth.

Ylang ylang is also useful in spa blends, sensual body care profiles, soft gourmand florals, floral musks, and tropical home fragrance compositions. Because it is rich, sweet, and naturally heavy, it can become heady, cloying, or overly floral if overdosed. It performs best when balanced with citrus oils, clean musks, soft woods, green notes, or gentle resins that lift and frame its opulent floral character.

Storage & Natural Variations

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil is classified as irritating to the skin, sensitising, hazardous if swallowed and enters the airways, and toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects. Always follow the IFRA guidance and SDS for the intended product category. The final safety assessment, dilution level, labeling, and regulatory compliance remain the responsibility of the manufacturer.

Essential oils are natural aromatic materials, and slight variations in scent, colour, density, and appearance may occur from batch to batch. These differences are normal and can be influenced by harvest conditions, climate, origin, plant material, and natural compositional variation.

Scent perception may also vary depending on individual sensitivity, dilution level, formulation base, and application method. Essential oils may not smell exactly the same in the bottle as they do in a finished product. We strongly recommend testing a 10g bottle before committing to larger quantities, especially for commercial production.

To preserve quality, store tightly sealed in the original container, away from heat, light, air, and moisture. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place and avoid release into drains, surface water, or the environment.

Product Guidance & FAQs

How can I use this essential oil and at what concentration?

The appropriate concentration depends on the essential oil, intended application and complete finished formulation. Refer to the Product Suitability Guide and applicable technical documentation for the relevant limits, and always test at the intended concentration before production.

Does this essential oil contain allergens?

Essential oils are naturally complex mixtures and may contain naturally occurring fragrance allergens such as limonene, linalool, citral or geraniol, depending on the botanical material. Relevant constituents and hazard information are disclosed in the product documentation where applicable.

Are essential oils naturally variable?

Yes. As botanical materials, essential oils can show normal variations in colour, odour and constituent profile between batches, harvests and origins. Such variation does not necessarily indicate a difference in quality or authenticity.

Can I apply this essential oil directly to my skin?

Essential oils are concentrated aromatic raw materials and should not be assumed suitable for undiluted skin application. Any use in a finished cosmetic or personal-care formulation must take account of the specific oil, concentration, applicable restrictions and complete formulation.

Should I test the essential oil in my own formulation?

Yes. Solubility, stability, scent profile and performance can vary considerably between bases and applications. Small-scale testing in the actual formulation is recommended before production.
