Base Note Fixative

A base note fixative is a low-volatility aroma material used to support the dry-down and help a fragrance remain perceptible for longer. These materials often add woody, musky, amber, balsamic or powdery character while anchoring lighter top and heart notes within the composition. Perfumers use base note fixatives to improve tenacity, smooth transitions and give a formula greater depth and cohesion. A fixative does not simply stop other ingredients from evaporating, and its effect depends on the complete formula, dosage and application. Careful dosing is important, as heavier materials can suppress freshness when overused.
