Ethyl Maltol 10 DPG Aroma Molecule

Ethyl Maltol is one of the most recognised sweetening materials in modern perfumery. Its effect is immediate, powerful, and highly recognisable, giving formulas a soft caramelised sweetness that can feel like candy floss, cooked sugar, strawberry jam, or warm dessert glaze depending on the surrounding materials. Perfumers use it not only to create gourmand effects, but also to smooth fruit notes, round vanillas, and add a contemporary sweetness to musks and lactonic accords. It is extremely effective, but it requires careful dosing because even small excesses can quickly dominate a composition.

The DPG dilution makes it easier to use in small-scale formulation, reduces weighing errors, and helps prevent accidental overdose. Even diluted, it remains very impactful and should be used carefully and in moderation.

  • Main impression: Caramelised gourmand sweetness
  • Supporting facets: Candy floss, warm sugar, strawberry jam, soft caramel
  • Drydown character: Sweet, creamy, lingering, confectionery
  • Used for: Sweetness, gourmand lift, fruit rounding, caramel effects, dessert accords

Olfactive Profile

  • Primary character: Sweet candyfloss and caramelised sugar with fruity jam nuances.
  • Texture: Sweet, syrupy, soft, and rounded, presented in an easy-to-dose liquid dilution.
  • Diffusion: Moderate; the DPG carrier may soften the immediate impact compared with neat Ethyl Maltol.
  • Tenacity: Good sweetness support, especially in gourmand, fruity, vanilla, and berry accords.
  • Comparison anchor: Sweeter and more candy-like than maltol, less creamy than vanillin, and more fruity-caramelised than coumarin.

Ethyl Maltol 10 DPG Aroma Molecule smells intensely sweet and edible, with the impression of caramelised sugar, candy floss, and warm fruit syrup. It does not smell like a complete vanilla or caramel accord on its own, but it can make those accords feel sweeter, smoother, and more indulgent. Its fruity nuance can suggest strawberry jam or red berry candy, making it especially useful in modern gourmand and fruity compositions. Used carefully, it adds charm and softness; overdosed, it can quickly turn a formula flat, sticky, and overly sugary.

Formulation & Creative Uses

What It Adds to Your Formula

  • Controlled sweetness: Adds the Ethyl Maltol effect in a more manageable 10% liquid dilution.
  • Gourmand effect: Helps create caramel, candy, dessert, jam, and bakery-style impressions.
  • Fruit rounding: Softens sharp berry, cherry, peach, tropical fruit, and citrus-fruit accords.
  • Warmth: Adds a cooked-sugar warmth to vanilla, lactonic, and creamy compositions.
  • Softness: Rounds harsh edges and makes aggressive fruity or floral materials feel smoother.
  • Modern appeal: Gives formulas the familiar sweet-gourmand signature used in many contemporary perfumes.

What It Does Not Do

  • It is not neat Ethyl Maltol: Dosage must be calculated based on the 10% active content.
  • It is not a full gourmand accord alone: It sweetens and rounds, but needs fruit, vanilla, lactones, musks, or woods for structure.
  • It does not replace vanilla: It adds caramelised sweetness, not the full creamy depth of vanillin or vanilla materials.
  • It does not add freshness: It is sweet, warm, and edible rather than bright, green, or aromatic.
  • It is not forgiving when overdosed: Too much can flatten nuance and make a formula smell sticky, childish, or overly candy-like.

Creative Uses

Ethyl Maltol is excellent for gourmand perfumes, dessert accords, berry blends, candy fruits, vanilla bases, lactonic musks, and soft playful florals. It can make strawberry, raspberry, cherry, peach, and tropical fruit notes feel more rounded and mouthwatering. In vanilla or cream accords, it adds a caramelised sugar glow. In musk compositions, tiny traces can create a soft skin-sweetness without turning the whole formula into a dessert.

Creative Inspiration

Use Ethyl Maltol 10 DPG Aroma Molecule with Vanillin and Coumarin for a warm gourmand base with caramelised softness. Pair it with Gamma Decalactone for creamy peach, apricot, and lactonic dessert effects. Combine it with berry or cherry materials to create jammy fruit sweetness. Use tiny traces with white musks to add a delicate sweet-skin effect without obvious gourmand heaviness.

Common Applications

  • Fine fragrance: Useful in gourmand, fruity, vanilla, lactonic, musky, and dessert-inspired perfumes.
  • Candles & wax melts: Suitable where the final formula allows; especially useful for bakery, vanilla, caramel, fruit, candy, and cozy gourmand profiles.
  • Reed diffusers: Can add sweet gourmand depth, subject to solubility and base compatibility.
  • Room sprays: Useful for sweet, fruity, cozy, edible, and dessert-style ambient fragrances.
  • Soaps & rinse-off products: Can support sweet fruity and gourmand profiles within the relevant safety requirements.
  • Cosmetic fragrance bases: Suitable for formulated cosmetic fragrances where permitted by IFRA and final product safety assessment.

Usage, Dose & Performance

  • Suggested starting dose: 0.2–3% of the supplied Ethyl Maltol 10% DPG solution.
  • Trace use: Adds soft candy sweetness and subtle fruity roundness.
  • Moderate use: Gives clear cotton candy, caramelised sugar, jammy fruit, and gourmand sweetness.
  • High use: Can become very sweet, sticky, candy-like, or flavour-like.
  • Active material calculation: Because this product is supplied at 10% in DPG, using 5% Ethyl Maltol 10% DPG in a fragrance concentrate contributes approximately 0.5% active Ethyl Maltol and 4.5% DPG.
  • Diffusion: Moderate; the DPG carrier can soften sharp sweetness and slow release.
  • Tenacity: Good sweetening effect, especially in the heart and drydown.
  • Overdose risk: Still high. Even at 10%, Ethyl Maltol can quickly dominate delicate florals, fresh notes, and fine fragrance structures.

Stability & Handling

Ethyl Maltol 10 DPG Aroma Molecule should be stored tightly sealed in its original container, away from heat, light, humidity, and prolonged air exposure. It is supplied as a ready-to-use liquid dilution, so no grinding, melting, or pre-dilution is normally required before formulation. Because Ethyl Maltol is naturally crystalline, slight crystal formation may occur after long storage or if the material has been kept in a cold environment. If this happens, place the closed bottle in a warm water bath for a few minutes and shake gently until the material returns to a uniform liquid. Do not use boiling water, direct heat, microwaves, or open flame.

The DPG carrier improves handling and makes Ethyl Maltol easier to weigh, dose, and blend compared with neat crystals. Discoloration risk still applies because the active material is Ethyl Maltol, even though it is diluted. Testing is recommended in white waxes, pale soaps, clear bases, and pastel formulations, especially where caramelised or yellowing effects would be undesirable.

Safety & Testing

Ethyl Maltol 10 DPG is a raw fragrance material dilution for formulation use. It is not a finished perfume, fragrance oil, or cosmetic product, and must not be applied directly to the skin as supplied unless used within a properly assessed final formula.

Always review the SDS, Allergen Declaration, Cosmetics Declaration, and Technical Data Sheet before use. Test the material in the intended base before production, as performance may vary depending on dosage, solvent system, wax type, diffuser base, surfactant system, pH, processing temperature, and packaging.

Final product safety, labelling, IFRA compliance, CLP classification, allergen declaration, cosmetic assessment, and market compliance remain the responsibility of the final product manufacturer.
